Land of Enchantment

Passed under the New Mexico state entrance arch a couple of hours ago, which would have made a great picture, but I was rolling at the time.  I'm in Mountain Time.  The New Mexico welcome center/rest stop follows immediately, and it is beautiful.  The lady in the picture is examining a dinosaur bone cast.

There is a fountain bubbling in a center courtyard with benches under the cool, shady roof overhang.

The inside is big and spacious, cool and dim, with big log beams in the ceiling.  The architecture invokes the traditional adobe post and beam style of the region, designed to stay cool in the hot desert climate.  The staff are very friendly and helpful.  They gave me an armful of glossy, colorful maps and guides, and some advice about visiting areas I'm interested in.  This is a state I intend to return to.

There are multiple rooms for presentations other functions.  The monitor was showing a kid program to keep the little ones entertained.

I can only describe the bathrooms as spectacular.  This pic doesn't do them justice.  Classic New Mexico designs tiled into the walls.

Here's a picture of KD outside the visitor center.  You can just see her great new curtains hanging in the window.  I think they are perfect.  They look kind of retro without being nauseating like a lot of seventies décor.
